P.E. Outline
Welcome
I would like to welcome you and your parents to this school year. The purpose of this outline is to provide clear guidelines that will enable you to be successful in this physical education class. Newcastle's goal is to promote positive attitudes towards an active lifestyle through fitness, motor development, game play and movement knowledge. Furthermore, we are trying to bridge the gap between Elementary P.E. to High School P.E.
Curriculum
Grade level activities will be broken up into units of 1 to 3 weeks. The units will vary upon grade level and may include: Volleyball, Soccer, Flag Football, Basketball, Cooperative Games, Ultimate Frisbee, Track & Field, Health/Fitness, Fitness Testing, Jump Rope Skills, Gym Games, Softball, Cardio, Cross-fit, Create-a-Game, Rugby, Project Fit, Dance, Yoga, and Speedminton.
Grades
Two key components to each unit will be for students to actively participate and to show good sportsmanship.... This is the exceptions for students to earn all 10 points a day: always prepared, participate enthusiastically, always willing to try all activities, outstanding effort. Exhibits: responsible personal and social behavior that respects self, others and equipment, demonstrates social skills necessary to work effectively with other (win or lose), displays positive attitude, consistently contributes as a team member, works in a safe manner. Shows respect to teachers, others and equipment.
Please note: there is a learning curve with the 6th -8th grade students in regards to being in a large group socially while remaining on task ....this can have a significant effect the students' grade.
Assignment Points = Varies
These assignments are skill tests, written reports, fitness quizzes and projects.
Daily Points = 10 (5 for Participation & 5 for Sportsmanship)
Note: grades will be entered into the grading program per unit
These points represent students’ ability to be prompt, wear the correct shoes, actively participating and show outstanding sportsmanship with teammates and opponents.
Combination of points from assignments and daily points will make up the grade earned in P.E. Total points are added and grades are based on the following percentages
100-90 = A
89- 80 = B
79- 70 = C
69- 60 = D
Below 59 % = F
Student Dress
Students are required to attend class dressed for active participation and it is mandatory that students wear athletic footwear every day they attend P.E. class. Non-participation will negatively affect grades. All electronic devices are to remain in the students’ back-packs during class.
Rules
The department has two sets of rules that we expect our students to follow:
School rules: Be sure to read over the school rules and consequences on the Newcastle web site.
Behavior expectations for physical education students are:
1. Be prepared (on time, ready to learn/participate, athletic shoes on.)
2. Show respect for oneself, classmates, teacher and equipment.
3. All equipment must be accounted for before class is dismissed.
Consequences:
Verbal Warning
Exclusion of class activity (time-out)
Loss of daily points and/or loss of merits
Teacher/Student conference
Teacher/Parent communication
Refer to Principal
Excused Non-Participation Parent Notes
If your student is unable to participate in physical activity due to a health related issue, please send me a note (e-mail is preferred) with the following information….date and accommodations that need to be made. NOTE: a note from a parent will excuse the student for 2 days only, anything beyond that will require a doctors’ note.
As a physical education teacher I am committed to provide a quality physical education experience for each and every Newcastle Student by ensuring a safe, non-threatening environment where everyone will have the opportunity for success.
